DES MOINES, Iowa - KETV.com

The Iowa Supreme Court announced plans Tuesday to hold 10 furlough days to help deal with the state budget shortfall.

The furlough means all court offices will be closed and workers will have unpaid days off for all judges, magistrates, and court staff. The move will save $4.1 million this fiscal year, officials said.

Officials said additional cost-cutting measures will be announced later this week.

The days designated for the courts to be close are: Dec. 4, Dec. 24, Dec. 31, Jan. 15, Feb. 15, March 12, March 26, April 2, May 28 and June 18.

"We designed the court closure schedule to minimize the impact of closures on the public as much as possible," said State Court Administrator David Boyd. "The days selected for court closures are typically the least busy day of the week in most courthouses. In addition, our experience from two previous times of unpaid leave shows that this arrangement, although not perfect, works reasonably well in most counties. Requiring everyone take unpaid leave at the same time is easier to implement within the constraints of our collective bargaining contracts and is a better arrangement for small clerk of court offices that have only two employees."

The latest planned cuts come in addition to those announced in March.
