HOUSTON - Police are taking action to stop crime at convenience stores across Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police are handing out safety DVDs starting Tuesday.
In 2007, Houston Mayor Bill White formed the Convenience Store Task Force to establish guidelines and make safety recommendations to the convenience store industry.
The DVD will help store owners, managers and employees understand general safety practices.
"If store owners just take a few minor steps in how they set up business, they can reduce crime at their stores by some 60 percent," Officer Joe Trevino said. "One of the key components in safety is training."
In 2010, all convenience stores will be required to register with HPD, have all employees view a training DVD provided once it is registered, have a trespass affidavit on file with HPD and posted in the store, post security signs and height strips at public exits and have a surveillance video system, a silent alarm system and a drop safe.
The videos is in four languages and available through the Asian Chambers of Commerce and the convenience store registration program.
