Boaters Upset About State Fee Hikes

Those upset with the Department of Land and Natural Resource's new plan to hike fees at state parks and harbors had their say Monday night.

At a public hearing at Jefferson Elementary, many were outraged by the land department's proposal to increase mooring fees and leases on harbor lands. Under the new fee hikes, the DLNR hopes to generate $4 million in the next two years.

The bulk of the testimony came from the boating community.

"I have several friends who are on fixed incomes. With these increases, it could create a situation where it would actually make them homeless," said Michael Kraft, resident and Ala Wai boater.

"If they need additional money, there are 171 empty slips with a two- to seven-year wait to get these slips. If they need additional money, they should actually be working to the filling of these slips."
