Veterans Day events 2009

Indianapolis - Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11th. There are many events honoring the nation's veterans that will be held throughout central Indiana and the rest of the country.

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery. At 11:00 a.m., a color guard, made up of members from each of the military services, renders honors to America's war dead during a tradition-rich ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The ceremony takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater.

The Veterans Day National Committee also selects a number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country.

Tuesday events

At noon, Carmel holds its Veterans Day ceremony in the Carmel Civic Square. Mayor Jim Brainard and others will attend.

From 1:00 to 3:00 pm, the Indiana State Museum is hosting a program called "Honoring Our Hoosier Heroes," with a concert of patriotic music by the Indianapolis Municipal Band at 3:00 pm. Five "Hoosier Heroes" will be recognized. Admission free for veterans.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, an ex-Marine, will attend an "Honoring Our Veterans" ceremony from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Flanner and Buchanan Community Life Center, 10722 E. Washington Street.

A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 W. 38th Street, in the Field of Valor section.

At 6:00 pm, Christ Our Shepherd Church of the Brethren in Greenwood will hold a Military, Veterans and Family dinner. Free for military veterans and their families.

At 7:30 pm, Greenwood High School and Whiteland High School choirs sing patriotic songs. $2 admission.

Wednesday

The day kicks off with a Veterans Day Drive from 9:00 am to noon at the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indy. They will collect personal and clothing items for hospitalized veterans.

At 11:00 am, it's the Veterans Day Memorial Service and Parade. The parade starts at 11:30 am at Michigan and Pennsylvania, south to New York Street, west to Meridian and north to St. Clair.

At 1:00 pm, Rep. Steve Buyer and state Rep. Phil Hinkle attend a Veterans Day Tribute at Westside Garden Plaza, 8616 W. 10th Street.

Veterans Day Cut-a-thon benefit - Sports Clips will donate a dollar towards the VFW's Operation Uplink program with every haircut.

Wednesday only:

Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut to all veterans and active armed forces members.

You can get a free meal at Applebee's.

Military members active and retired get 10 percent off their purchase at Home Depot through Wednesday and they get ten percent off every day at Lowe's.

Also Wednesday, all veterans and active military get free admission to the Indianapolis Zoo. Family members get 20 percent off.

You need to provide a military ID or proof of service for these deals.
