Lawrence - Police say Richard Burd, 43, owner of Burd Ford, took his own life. Burd's body was discovered in his office at the Burd dealership, 10300 Pendleton Pike, early Tuesday morning.

Burd's wife, Chris Burd, told police she spoke with her husband Monday night, then called them early Tuesday morning when he did not come home.

Police say Burd's office was locked when they discovered his body.

Employees at Burd Ford are calling it a tragedy and a death in the family. The dealership is closed for business Tuesday.

Richard Burd was one of central Indiana's best known car dealers. He and his wife often appeared in commercials together, signing off with the catch-phrase, "Haven't you heard? Burd's the word."

Burd is being remembered as a businessman who frequently gave back to the community.

"Rich wanted to put back in the community because the community was helping him. They very much participated in the community. They were sponsors for our Community Day. They helped with the cancer walks that we had. And there were a lot of things that they contributed to that nobody really knew - they contributed to Shop with a Cop at Christmas time, they contributed to a needy family. I think at the end of the day if they looked at it, everyone would be surprised at how many lives they really touched," said Paul Ricketts, Lawrence mayor.

At this point Lawrence Police are calling it a death investigation. The dealership will reopen Wednesday.
