HARVEY, La. - WDSU .com
A barge carrying a crane struck the Lapalco Bridge early Tuesday morning, forcing the bridge's closure, according to Jefferson Parish officials.
The bridge over the Harvey Canal was closed to all vehicular and marine traffic until it was inspected and repaired, a Jefferson Parish representative said.
As of 5:20 p.m. one lane in each direction across the Lapalco Bridge opened.
Teams were on site Tuesday morning inspecting the entire bridge to determine the extent of the damage and a method for repairs.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the collision.
Leaders said they still aren't sure when the bridge will completely open.
