A new proposal being considered by Omaha Public Schools would allow elementary and middle school students to attend class anywhere in the district.
The proposal was designed to foster diversity, said school officials. It also would allow parents to seek schools that may better fit their children's talents and interests.
The proposal would also bus the students to their selected schools.
It has been 11 years since changes have been made to the district's assignment plan.
Under the proposal, parents would choose their top three schools. But it’s not first-come, first-serve; favor would be given to those students who have a sibling at the school.
Then, the focus would shift to socio-economic diversity, zeroing in on students in the free or reduced lunch program.
"There is an openness about the plan, whether you are a student within OPS or a student that lives outside OPS," said spokeswoman Carla Noerllinger.
The proposal includes the two-county learning community. Simply put, a child living in Bellevue can attend a school in Omaha.
"It's a good idea. It's a real good idea because you can go to what school you want to go to," said Steven Marshall.
Said Rita Gaber, "Some schools are, I hate to say it, but probably better then others and I guess I'm OK with that."
Transportation costs may increase under the proposal. However, state reimbursement funds will be available for students who select OPS schools.
