Duluth's first H1N1 immunization clinic opened up at the DECC today, as hundreds of at–risk people lined up to get vaccinated.
Because the vaccine is only available in limited quantities at this time, only certain groups of people are eligible to participate in this week–long clinic.
LeAnn Wallace reports.
"That's it. Wow that was it? That was it. Who's next?"
Gail Gustafson and her two sons made the trip to Duluth from Ely to get the H1N1 vaccine.
"They both have a chronic condition and we thought we'd come and see if they were eligible for a shot."
For the Gustafson's the process was relatively quick.
"It's been very smooth in fact I was saying to my son if we were hurdlers we could jump over all the lines because it was really quick."
"And how was the shot for you? It was very fast."
Estimated wait times on Saint Mary's Duluth Clinic's website were between 20 and 30 minutes for most of the day.
But they're prepared for even more traffic...
"Officials estimate 1,200 people will come here to the DECC each day this week to get vaccinated."
"Can I help whose next?"
Those eligible for the week–long walk in clinic include: pregnant women, people who provide care for infants younger than 6 months old, healthy children 6 months old to 4 years old, and healthy children 5 years old to 18 years old that also have a chronic illness.
No appointment is necessary for the free clinic, but you must present a photo–ID with current address and a medical or government health insurance card. Those without insurance will be charged a nominal free.
Anyone getting the vaccine must also be free of flu symptoms.
Both the shot version and the nasal spray version of the vaccine is being administered.
The clinic runs November 9th-13th at the Lake Superior Ballroom at The Decc from 10:00 a.m - 6:00 pm while supplies last.
