A three-man team of paramedics became North Carolina's first to win the International Trauma Life Support Paramedic Competition, competing against teams from four countries.
Roger Horton, Barry McMillian and Robert Coleson represented Surry County in the competition, held in Charlotte over the weekend.
"They set up a simulated scenario. This one was where the victims fell on a scaffolding system and our guys had to treat them with hopefully a good outcome," said Surry County EMS director John Shelton.
The Surry County team, which has won the regional competition in North Carolina 18 years straight, competed against paramedic teams from Japan, Palestine, Canada and two others from the United States.
"We're really proud of them. They've done a great job," Shelton said, noting that this was the first time a team from North Carolina won the competition.
Next year's competition will be held in Nevada. Shelton said the team will be defending its win.
