Interior Sec. says panel will review delta science

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says independent scientists will explore alternative ways to protect a native fish species in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta that could
allow more water to California's farm belt.

Salazar on Monday announced the review by the National Academies of Sciences.

Some of the nation's most productive farmland has been idled because of three years of drought, as well as federal water restrictions to protect the delta smelt.

The shortages have led to high unemployment and economic distress in the San Joaquin Valley.

The scientific review will examine the government's comprehensive plans to protect the fish, one of which has led to reduced water flows.

The independent body is set to issue a report in March.
