Levittown - Archery hunting will be allowed at the park for two weeks from Jan. 9 to Jan 23.
A two-week archery deer hunt at Tyler State Park has been approved for Jan. 9 to Jan. 23, officials from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said.
Officials had been considering a much longer hunt, but settled on the two-week period that coincides with the end of archery season in Pennsylvania.
"Hunting will be allowed for antler-less deer to help reduce the park's deer population and keep it in balance with the unique ecosystem of the park," said park Manager Michael Crowley.
The park will remain open to the general public during the hunt. Hunting won't be permitted in designated safety zones and certain other designated areas within the park. A map showing these areas is available at the park office.
Archers will be selected by lottery and can obtain an application at the park office. Applications must be returned to the office by Nov. 30.
Archers must have a valid Tyler State Park special permit, and both a valid Pennsylvania Game Commission hunting license and an archery license. Hunters will be permitted to kill only antler-less deer and will therefore also have to have a valid 5D Wildlife Management Unit antler-less license. All selected hunters also must attend a safety orientation.
Portable tree stands will be permitted, but must comply with Game Commission regulations governing their use on public land.
The annual one-day shotgun hunt at Tyler is scheduled for Dec. 9. Call: 215-968-2021.
