Fire companies respond to leaf burning calls

Levittown - Residents burning leaves in Buckingham and Solebury raised alarm - or alarms - on Sunday.The Doylestown Fire Co. responded to two fires in Buckingham. Shortly before 5 p.m., Doylestown crews were called to the 3800 block of Terwood Drive for leaves burning out of control. The fire, however, was extinguished by the homeowner before firefighters arrived. A short time later, crews were back in Buckingham after receiving a call of an odor of smoke in an area of the border of Buckingham and the Doylestown's Maplewood section. Firefighters canvassed the area and found a small pile of leaves on fire and extinguished the blaze.Midway Fire Co. crews were called to the area of Hidden Valley Drive and Aquetong Road in Solebury for a fire in a leaf pile. Again the blaze was extinguished by the homeowner before firefighters arrived.Both Buckingham and Solebury permit leaf burning. "Homeowners should never allow a leaf pile to burn unattended," said Doylestown Fire Co. Chief Denny Loux Jr., who admitted that leaf burning is a concern for fire companies this time year.Loux added that all fires should be out before dusk and the homeowner should have a sufficient amount of water nearby to extinguish the blaze.- Staff writer Bill Devlin
