Elderly Man Killed After Accidentily Shooting Self While Hunting

On the opening day of Minnesota's deer firearm hunting season, an elderly Minnetonka man died after accidentally shooting himself in the chest.

The self-inflicted gun shot wound happened yesterday morning. Itasca County Sheriff Pat Medure identified the victim as Daniel Otto Cermak.

Authorities say Cermak was hunting about 11 miles north of Deer River in Bowstring Township.

He was armed with a 30-30 lever-action rifle when it discharged and hit him in the chest. Cermak died at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for sometime today. The Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Deer River Fire Department and Deer River Ambulance Service as well as Minnesota Conservation and State Patrol Officers.
