HURLOCK, Md. - WBALTV.com

A state trooper is being praised for saving an Eastern Shore man from a burning home Sunday.

Maryland State Police said Trooper First Class R. Singleton was on patrol in the Hurlock area when he heard a broadcast about a house fire in the 100 block of Maryland Avenue.

Singleton was nearby and responded to the scene. Officials said he arrived before the fire crews and raced into the home to save Jim Malone, 53.

Police said Malone was choking and disoriented from all the smoke. Singleton was able to find Malone and lead him to safety.

Malone was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and is said to be in good condition.

Singleton was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was released and returned to patrol.
