The San Mateo County coroner's office has identified the body found decomposing in a covered public swimming pool in Redwood City Thursday. A maintenance worker found the body of Gabriel Contreras, 21, of Palo Alto after lifting part of the cover from the swimming pool at Hoover Park. The worker was investigating neighbors' complaints of a foul smell in the area.

The pool, located at Woodside Road and Spring Street, has been closed since July. The body had apparently been in the water for some time and was decomposing, according to police.

The coroner's office did not release any details on how Contreras died, or how long his body may have been in the water. Redwood City police are investigating his death.
