Smoke From Slidell Fire Visible From I-12

SLIDELL, La. - WDSU .com

Firefighters responded to a major structure fire near Slidell Saturday afternoon.

At 2:17 p.m., dispatchers began receiving calls from passersby about a large column of smoke visible from Interstate 12 near Highway 11. Responding units were at the scene within seven minutes and found the structure at 60341 Powell Road totally engulfed.

The structure housed Big T Tire Store, a retail business. The cause is under investigation.

Nine trucks from Fire District 1responded, in addition to a tanker from Fire District 11, which serves the Pearl River area. District 11 and Fire District 4 from the Mandeville area sent additional units to be on standby if other emergencies arise in FD1’s coverage area.

In addition to the destruction of the primary fire scene, several abandoned residences nearby sustained damage.

There were no injuries and no evacuations required.
