MADISON, Miss. - WAPT.com
For the last 17 years, the Mississippi Food Network has collected canned goods for the Food for Families program, but Madison Central High School made history by raising 134,497 cans -- the most ever raised by one school.
Madison Central High School raised about 87 cans per student.
"Our goal this year is to bring as many cans as possible," said Principal Edith Mitchell. "Last year our kids brought in a excess of 120,000. We used to compete against different schools but now it is just merely a competition among ourselves, and not so much as a competition as to meet the needs of the needy in Mississippi."
Students said they're excited for the food drive.
"I think it's great for a student to be aware that there are needy families, especially because Madison is such a nice place to live," said junior Katie Bole Ware. "I don't think we realize that there are families that need our help and need food."
"We've got green beans. We've got all kinds of vegetables and all kinds of meat," said junior Christian Jarrett. "We got tomato paste, so we can make some good soup."
The school's principal said her students have heart.
"It's all about giving back to the community," Mitchell said. "This is just one of the examples that displays their commitment to the community."
The total number of cans collected during the Food for Families food drive is about 207,000, already surpassing last year's total of about 202,000.
