OMAHA, Neb. - KETV.com

A $70 million recreation center set to open in the heart of south Omaha will host events from physical recreation to foreign language classes.

Officials hope the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Corps Community Center will play a part in revitalizing and engaging a dynamic community.

The 122,000 square-foot center contains a basketball court, swimming pool, a computer lab and a 600-seat performing arts center.

"To have this here in our own back yards, right next to a lot of residential homes and projects housing divisions, it's great," said long-time resident Anita Rojas.

The center's arts director, Gina Ponce, said the center will offer a wealth of experiences, like dance classes, foreign languages and parenting classes -- all services in which the community has shown an interest.

"I think its nice -- to keep kids out of trouble, something to look forward to and programs that they can get into instead of being out in these streets," said resident Michael Sanders.

The center officially opens on Nov. 16.

An open house will take place from Nov. 9 through Nov. 13. Open house hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The center was funded by a Kroc grant and local donations.
