GRANDVIEW, Mo. - KMBC.com
A 40-year-old woman was killed and another woman was injured Thursday afternoon in an accident at a Grandview Car Wash, police said.
The woman and a 66-year-old woman were sitting on a bench outside the business at 12204 Blue Ridge, waiting for their cars to come out of the car wash, when they were hit by a Toyota SUV.
Police said the driver of the Toyota SUV, a 66-year-old Leawood, Kan., man, had stayed in his vehicle while it was being washed. The man had just exited the car wash and pulled in front for the final detailing.
Investigators said it appears the SUV was put in gear, hitting the women on the bench before it flipped on its side.
"When I got up there the truck was turned up on its side," said Shonda Gee, who works next door to the car wash. "I guess instead of him hitting the brake he hit the accelerator, and trying to get it under control he went up on the curb and hit those two women."
Gee said the impact pushed one of the women through a glass window.
The driver of the Toyota was not hurt. The 66-year-old woman is hospitalized in stable condition with a broken leg.
Gee said the driver was very distraught.
"He was very upset, very hysterical. Imagine what's going through his mind knowing that he took a life from a mere car accident," Gee said.
The crash remains under investigation.
