Both the US Senate and the House of Representatives have passed a bill expanding the number of weeks available for Federal Emergency Unemployment benefits up to 14 weeks for all states and up to an additional 6 weeks for high unemployment states like Nevada. However, the President has yet to sign the bill. Once the bill is signed into law, the U.S. Department of Labor will issue the instructions necessary to allow states to begin paying these additional benefits.
Nearly 8,000 claimants, who have exhausted all of their benefits, will be mailed a notice explaining how they can apply for these additional benefits, said Cindy Jones, Deputy Director of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, (DETR)/Employment Security Division Administrator.
Information on the status of the implementation of the new benefits expansion will be made available on DETR's website at www.nvdetr.org, as it becomes available. Claimants who have exhausted their benefits are discouraged from contacting the Unemployment Insurance telephone claims centers as no additional information is available at this time.
Currently, there are about 119,000 people receiving unemployment in Nevada; 63,000 are receiving the initial regular benefit payment of up to 26 weeks, the other 54,000 are receiving some type of extended benefit payment. Those receiving extensions will likely qualify for the new extension currently under consideration. However, at this time applications for extensions are only available through the end of the year. I am hopeful congressional action will extend the program before it sunsets at years end, Jones said.
