Hundreds Rush to Batavia For H1N1 Vaccination Clinic

There were long lines and a packed building as hundreds of people lined out the door and around the building at an H1N1 vaccination clinic in Batavia during Thursday afternoon. The Genesee County Health Department gave out around 500 Swine Flu vaccinations in County Building #2. People came from all over Western New York and beyond to get vaccinated, especially since the supply has been limited and there continues to be Swine Flu related deaths. It was just earlier this week that health officials told a family in the county that their son's death was linked to H1N1.

People at the clinic on Thursday, including one mother with five children, say they're taking precautions. "I just want to really make sure they are protected," Terri Mclean said. "We're actually from Monroe County and this is the only clinic we could find anywhere in the area, so we decided to come and wait here."

"I'm just afraid because there are people dying... I just want to be able to protect my family," Ashley Wells, another parent at the clinic, said. "I have a baby and I just feel it's important to protect him as much as I can."

There are only so many Swine Flu vaccines available. For example in Cattaraugus County several clinics have been postponed, including those in Ellicottville, Machias, and Dayton which should all eventually be rescheduled.

Certain criteria must be met in order to get an H1N1 vaccination. First off you must be healthy, ages 2 through 24 can get one, and those who are 25 through 49 if they live with or care for infants younger than 6 months. For more details on this go to our website's homepage and click on newslinks.
