The Civil Air Patrol is crediting a captain in its Arizona Wing with helping find the bodies of three North Dakota college students who died when their vehicle plunged into a pond in a pasture. The patrol says Justin Ogden, who works with cell phone forensics, pinpointed the crash site within 730 feet, helping lead local searchers there.

The Dickinson State University softball players had used cell phones to try to call friends for help after getting in trouble late Sunday while out on what authorities believe was a stargazing trip.

The 28-year-old Ogden says even if a cell phone is not being used but is powered up, officials often can receive enough information to concentrate the search in the right area.

Ogden works for General Dynamics and recently was assigned to a new project to develop a nationwide communications system for the Justice Department.
