When parents heard of a kindergarten girl cleaning up another student's urine at Floresta Elementary School, they were shocked. But one mother wasn't.

"(It will happen) over and over and over again until something changes," said Melissa Barton.

The mother of three has been battling the St. Lucie County school district ever since a kindergarten teacher allowed students to vote her autistic son out of the classroom.

"I think teachers need to be held accountable for what takes place in their classroom," said Barton.

Barton worries that the humiliation Alex Barton went through is something this 6-year-old girl will now have to endure as well.

"She thought right away I was upset with her," said the girl's mother, Lisa Portieles. "And I tried to explain to her that, 'You're 6 years old. You're a child. You don't know any better. It's the job of a teacher.'"

Barton moved to Hobe Sound and enrolled her son in private school. All the same, she'd like to see St. Lucie County classrooms be a nurturing place for young students.

"Alex is in counseling on a weekly basis and will be for a very long time for what he's gone through, the humiliation," said Barton. "I don't know what she is going to need. I just know the community needs to support the mother, and the mother can support her child."
