DAVIS, Calif. - KCRA.com
Some Davis parents and students say they are overwhelmed by the amount of daily homework that schools require.
Davis Joint Unified School District
is conducting a survey on the issue to develop a more flexible policy.
School leaders said the homework policy is clear. Each student is given a time limit on homework based on their grade level. For instance, the limit for seventh and eighth graders is about two hours a day.
But some students said they spend much more time on homework, leaving little time for anything else.
"You go to school to do work, and then you come home and you want to relax, but you have to do more work," eighth grader Emma Peterson said.
"If you have a science teacher giving an hour of homework, and the math teacher doing the same, and the English teacher doing the same, without their ability to coordinate that homework, you have a child who's suddenly over-stressed," Heidy Kellison said.
The survey is asking students how much homework they have, and whether it is too much, not enough or just about right. Separate surveys are being offered for teachers and parents.
The survey will wrap up on Friday.
