A group of Broome Community College students staged a sit-in on campus yesterday. The students goal was to get the attention of the BCC Board of Trustees. 2nd year student Ashely Vincent says she isn't happy that the board and faculty haven't been able to agree on a contract. She also doesn't like that BCC hasn't had a permanent president in more than a year. Soon, the students will deliver a petition to the board, reading that those who have signed don't have confidence in the board. Ashley Vincent says, I had a professor who was talking to us about first ammendment rights and showed us the video from Berkeley in 1960 where they had that strike or sit-in. I said, 'why can't we do that, because I know there are a lot of problems here?' The board of trustees doesn't know the students know what's going on. BCC Board of Trustees President Angelo Mastrangelo says students are rightfully concerned about the contact and president issue. And, so is the board. Mastrangelo says the board has been negotiating in good faith with faculty and the most recent proposed contract has been before them for the past six weeks. He says the board is working hard on the behalf of faculty and students. As for the president search. Candidates will be coming to visit the campus the week of November 15th. No word on how many candidates the field is down to. The Tioga County Health Department has scheduled its first public swine flu vaccination clinic for next Monday. The clinic is restricted to people in the following 3 priority groups: pregnant women, children ages 6 months to 5 years, and caregivers for infants less than 6 months old. There are only 28 slots available and you must make an appointment in advance by calling 687-8600. The Tioga County Health Department has 13 hundred doses of H1N1 vaccine on hand and plans to hold school clinics during the second half of November. The local swine flu outbreak has prompted one hospital chain to tighten its visitation procedures. Binghamton General and Wilson Hospitals will no longer allow visitors under the age of 18. Visiting hours are 9 A-M to 7 P-M with only 2 visitors per patient. United Health Services discourages anyone with flu-like symptoms from coming to the hospitals, unless seeking treatment. A spectacular new veterans home in Oxford now has people living in it. . This was move-in day for more than 200 people, mostly veterans. The 71 million dollar home is about two times as big as the old building next door. It features wider halls, new dining rooms, and private rooms with a bathroom for residents. Before residents had to share rooms. There are also lifting devices in bedrooms for those who need assistance. To help with the move, about 60 Brome Community College Psychology and Human Services program students came.
