LOUISVILLE, Ky. - WLKY.com
Federal stimulus dollars are going to work in eastern Jefferson County to upgrade local water service.
Tuesday morning, the Louisville Water Company broke ground on a new $20 million project.
Explosive growth outside the Gene Snyder Freeway has caused water pressure issues over the past few years.
Louisville Water Company officials said the new project will ease those problems.
A 5.5 mile water main made up of 36 inch steel pipes will transport water along Interstate 64 from the Gene Snyder to the Shelby County line.
Also included in the plan are a new pumping station and a storage tank that will improve pressure and fire fighting capabilities in the area.
The total cost for the $20 million and 20 percent of the amount will be covered by stimulus dollars.
“We are going to be able to deliver a more reliable service, as well as higher pressure to out customers,” said Louisville Water Company President and CEO Greg Heitzman.
Mayor Jerry Abramson said one of the best part of the project is that there will 164 new jobs created to build the storage facility and pumping station. The project is expected to be completed by 2011.
