A Bogue Chitto teen has been expelled after bringing a pocket knife to school.
A teacher found the knife when it fell out of the TeSheon Rogers' book bag during a fight with a male student. Rogers said the boy was bullying her sister.
Rogers, a junior at Bouge Chitto School, was expelled for the rest of the year on Tuesday. She can't reapply for reinstatement until next year, school officials said.
"It's hard. It's really hard," Rogers said. "I have never had no problem (sic) at school or nothing like that. It's just not right."
Rogers said she used the knife for fishing and forgot it was in her bag. She said the knife fell out when a male student pushing her into a desk. Rogers said the boy attacked her when she told him to stop bullying her sister.
"It's hard because my daughter -- it's stressful for her, and she feels real bad about what happened," said Jeanet Brown, Rogers' mother.
The Lincoln County School Board held an expulsion hearing on Monday, at which Rogers and Brown had 10 minutes each to make their case. The board also allowed family members and members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to address the board two at a time. The NAACP said other students have brought knives to school but weren't expelled.
When asked about the NAACP's claims and Rogers case, the superintendent told 16 WAPT News that student privacy rights prohibit him from commenting.
Rogers was asked whether she felt remorseful.
"I can say nothing about it. It's done," Rogers said. "I feel bad about it. I apologized but things happen."
Rogers said the boy with which she was in a scuffle was suspended but has since returned to class.
Rogers faces criminal charges in juvenile court. She's attending court-ordered anger-management classes and must pay a $250 fine to the school district.
