Residents who live above Wilson's Carpet in Weston said they smelled smoke around 5:30 a.m.

By 6:30 a.m., the entire top floor was engulfed in flames and thick smoke.

David Coon said he ran through the building trying to wake up the rest of the tenants.

He said he believes there are at least four families living in the building.

Weston Fire Chief Michael Young said his firefighters were able to perform a "quick interior attack" that saved the building from complete destruction.

Young said a resident told him that she smelled smoke before taking a shower.

When she came out, her entire living room was full of smoke.

Other fire departments on the scene included Jackson's Mill, Jane Lew, Pricetown and Buckhannon.

Chief Young said the building will be without electricity and that the front apartment is "completely gutted."

Several pets died in the fire.
