Jessamine Co. Wildlife Refuge Makes Urgent Appeal For Donations

A Jessamine County animal refuge is asking the public for some unusual help in order to be able to feed its animal population.
Organizers at Wolf Run Wildlife Refuge, located near Nicholasville, say they are broke and facing a crisis due to the struggling economy. Workers are literally scraping the bottom of the barrel for money.
"Our CEO and founder is, as we speak, at Kroger turning in the change jar," said Lynn Blacketer, the Wolf Run fundraising chairperson. "That's how bad it is right now."
Organizers say it takes roughly $1,200 a week to care for the center's 80 animals. Blacketer said the refuge relies completely on donations from the community. And, in addition to money, they say they have some admittedly strange requests.
"We feed the lions whole chickens. what they need is whole carcasses," said Blacketer "So O'd put out a plea to all the deer hunters out there. Bring us what is left of your deer. The lions love the heads and legs and it's exactly what they need."
Blacketer said that if they are unable to care for the animals, most will be euthanized.
