Father of murder victims pleads guilty to drug charges

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- A man whose family was killed -- possibly because of the opium ring he's accused of running -- pleaded guilty to three drug-related charges on Monday.

Brian Tzeo was sentenced to 30 months of probation after pleading guilty to possession with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, conspiracy to possess opium with intent to manufacture and distribute, and maintaining a dwelling for manufacturing controlled substance.

Tzeo's wife and three children -- the youngest just 3 years old -- were killed in March. Investigators have said the killings were likely related to the opium ring Tzeo is charged with running out of the same house where the murders happened.

Tzeo is currently living in Alexander County with a friend, so his probation will be served there.

The probation includes 50 hours of community service, a $500 fine and several fees.

At a hearing in October, Tzeo's attorney said his client has suffered enough and he shouldn't have to serve jail time for the drug charges.

"I think public perception is that it was his fault or that he had something to do with it," said defense attorney Dan Fulkerson. "He's aware. He just is a man who lost all of his children and his wife."
