A Mercer County man is in jail after police say he led them on a high speed chase, nearly hit a cruiser head on, then crashed into a car full of kids. It happened Saturday night around 11 in Scott county and ended several miles later in Bourbon County.
Victoria Stanfield says her husband's truck with their four children and her 11 year old brother was thrown into a ditch near the Wal-Mart on the Paris Bypass. She says the group had just finished trick or treating and was stopped at a red light when they saw the police coming at them. She says her husband tried to back up but it was too late.
Police say Russell Gibson ran into the car. They say they noticed him driving erratically on 75 near the 125 exit. They started to pursue him on US 460 East. That's when they say he sped up and nearly hit a police officer head on. He didn't stop until he got to Paris and hit Melvin Stanfield.
Victoria Stanfield says her 12 and 13 year old sons were injured. They were taken to UK hospital, but are now back home.
Gibson is charged with fleeing and evading, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs, seven counts of wanton endangerment, including one on a police officer, speeding over 26 miles per hour and reckless driving.
He is being held in the Bourbon County Jail on 20 thousand dollars full cash bond.
