Emergency dispatchers told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that two vehicles collided near the Edgewood-Swissvale exit of the outbound Parkway East shortly after 3 a.m.

Emergency crews rescued a man trapped inside one of the vehicles. He and another person were taken to UPMC Presbyterian, and a third person was taken to UPMC Mercy. A fourth person was also hospitalized.

State police said a pickup truck driven by Mark A. Falcone, 21, of Pittsburgh, rear-ended a Ford Taurus driven by Christopher E. Sage, 31, of Irwin. The truck then struck a guide rail and overturned onto the Edgewood exit ramp. Sage lost control of his car, which struck the Jersey barrier in the median several times.

State police identified a passenger in the pickup truck as Kenneth G. Shanter Jr., 26, of Saltsburg, and a passenger in the car as James Sherbine, 30, of Mount Pleasant.

The conditions of those injured were not immediately released, and it was not specified which person was trapped inside one of the vehicles.

Authorities reopened the outbound lanes at about 8 a.m. and continued to investigate.
