The Clinton School District is considering a new grading system, which educators say could mean more scholarship money for some students.
Students in the Clinton Public School District may see a change a report on their report cards in the future. The district is considering changing the current grading scale to a 10-point grading system.
According to the new system, 90 percent would be an A, 80 percent would be a B and a student could get 70 percent and still get a C. Anything lower than 64 percent is an F.
District officials said this could help students when they're applying for college and give them more scholarship opportunities. They maintained that the changes would only be in the grading system and not in the quality of education.
"Students are not going to be held to a lower standard because of that," said Sandi Beason of the Clinton Public School District.
She said schools with the proposed grading system have seen plenty of benefits.
"They've seen a reduction in dropouts. They've seen increases in their graduation rates. Their students are eligible for more scholarship money when they graduate high school, so we've seen a lot of benefits from it based on the research we've done," Beason said.
District officials were in the process of getting feedback from parents but so far most have been supportive, they said.
"I think it will do a lot for kids as far as scholarships go for the future and maybe even more self-esteem when they can bring home a 90 and have an A on their report card," said Berry Bedells, who has three children in the district. "The biggest benefit I think would be on their grade point average at the end of their careers."
District officials said they could make a decision by spring as to whether it's going to implement a 10-point grading system in schools. The Rankin County School District recently implemented the new grading system.
