A retired police officer appeared Friday in court on drunken driving charges after a Warsaw man videotaped him driving erratically and reported him to police.

Vernon C. Sheneves was stopped Thursday afternoon by sheriff's deputies at state routes 101 and 56, shortly after he crossed into Switzerland County over Markland Dam.

Dispatchers in Gallatin County said they had received other reports about the erratic driver, but they said officers briefly lost him.

The Warsaw man videotaped the driver as he helped authorities track him down.

Deputies said Sheneves told them he was a retired Columbus, Ohio, police officer and refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and taken into police custody.

Sheneves spent the night in jail before his arraignment, and he was later released on $500 bond.
