SALEM, Ore. (AP) — While hundreds of inmates in Oregon are getting out a bit early thanks to cost-cutting legislation, a burglar from Marion County is back behind bars. Authorities say 53-year-old Bennis Berthold was released two weeks ago from an Oregon prison because of state legislation passed in June. But they say he's now back behind bars, held at the Marion County jail and accused of possessing alcohol and failing to check in with his parole officer. Berthold would have been in prison until early next year. But the Legislature increased the amount of time prisoners can get shaved off their sentences. The Salem Statesman-Journal says that more than 1,300 inmates in Oregon have gotten out early under the legislation. ___ Information from: Statesman Journal, http://www.statesmanjournal.com ©2009 Associated Press.
