Members of the Humanitarian Aid Club and Key Club at North Haven High School will be out trick-or-treating on Saturday night, but they won't be asking for candy. Instead, they're collecting canned goods that will stock the shelves of the Connecticut Food Bank and the North Haven Food Bank.

Ten trick-or-treaters collected nearly 200 pounds of food last year. This year, they have 30 volunteers ready to collect.

"Even the people that didn't get the fliers in their mailboxes, they would still go and be like, 'Oh, I'll go see if I have anything to give you," says Taylor Haaf, who is collecting cans for her second year. "They would go in the back and dig up some things to give us."

Students joining in the effort said this isn't about giving up their Halloween night. They don't see it as a sacrifice at all and they feel more connected to their community by giving back.

"After we graduate, we enter the world and I feel like we've lost that connection to the real world," Shavnam Elahi, of the Humanitarian Aid Club, said. "We focus on, 'Oh my God, the test tomorrow.' It's like, 'No this is happening to real people every day.'"
