Dr. Christopher Thompson was sued Thursday in federal court for negligence and battery.

Ron Peterson claims he and another biker suffered permanent injuries in the July 4, 2008, crash.

His lawsuit claims the 60-year-old emergency room physician pulled alongside the riders and exchanged angry words before cutting in front and hitting the brakes.

Thompson also faces criminal charges. He has pleaded not guilty to battery and reckless driving. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

His attorney called the crash an accident.
