Hendricks County - Brownsburg becomes the second school district this week to cancel plans for mass H1N1 vaccinations.

Thousands of parents got the word Friday morning that their children will not receive the vaccine at a school clinic as originally planned. Hamilton Southeastern, which has about 18,000 students, also canceled its plans for a district-wide clinic this week.

Roughly half of parents with children in Brownsburg schools signed the consent form for the vaccination.

"What we've told the schools is we're not sure when we can get into the school with the limited supply of vaccine we're getting. In order to get into the school systems the way we planned which was to do all schools in a week, we would need 15,000 doses of vaccine all at one time, and we're not getting anywhere near that type of vaccine order. We've told the schools that in the parents' best interest that we're not able to get in there right now, we're not sure when we can get in there, so they may want to take the children elsewhere for the vaccine," said Monica Smith, Hendricks County Health Department.

Both the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine have been subject to delays and shortages. While the seasonal flu shot is a little easier to get, there are shortages because H1N1 production has taken up manufacturers' schedules. But orders for the H1N1 vaccine are far behind schedule, with local counties receiving only a fraction of expected vaccine.
