As Lewis "Buck" Ballard starts serving his life sentence in prison for killing six year old Wesley Mullins, friends, family and strangers of the boy gathered on Thursday in Bourbon County to remember him at the place he was killed.

A crowd of two dozen met at the site of "Wesley's Place" in Paris, a community center being built where Wesley's grandfather's house and garage used to stand.

A family member shared a poem, and a local faith leader recited a prayer and sang a hymn. The crowd released blue balloons into the sky and consoled one another.

Family and friends hope Wesley's story will raise awareness about child abuse.

Some of Wesley's relatives released balloons from his grave at the same time the balloon release at the community center took place.

Founders of "Wesley's Place" will be painting the building on November 7th and 8th, starting at 10 a.m. on both days. All who want to help are welcome.
