The alleged abuse happened in a factory parking lot in LaVergne. The child's mother said she left the baby with her boyfriend, Ricky Palmer. Palmer told police baby was crying and upset and that the child fell and hit his head on the car floor.
The mother saw bruising on the baby's face later that night and took him to the emergency room.
According to the police report, the baby had contusions on his face and red finger marks on his back.
"It's very unfortunate when we have to investigate cases of alleged child abuse," said Kyle Norrad of the LaVergne Police Department
Palmer has not been arrested or charged with anything related to the baby's injuries, but he was arrested on outstanding warrants from Smyrna and Rutherford County.
