CENTER LINE, Mich. - Police officers in Center Line shot a man early Wednesday morning, after he pointed a shotgun at them, police said.

Jeffery Wanks, 40, was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

According to police, 29-year-old homeowner Kristi Green called 911 claiming her tenant, Wanks, was arguing with her throughout the night and had shoved her.

When police arrived at the home on Lorraine around 1 a.m., Green told the officers Wanks was in the basement and had a shotgun, according to a release from the Center Line Police Department.

Police saw Wanks at the bottom of the stairs, and after several warnings, he pointed the double barrel shotgun at the officers, according to police.

The officers then opened fire, shooting six bullets and striking Wanks at least twice, once in the hand and once in the chest, according to investigators.

"Anytime an officer has a weapon pointed at them, it's an immediate threat. Our officers followed protocol of the department," said Center Line Police Chief John Riley. "They are authorized to protect themselves."

Green's two children, a 9-year-old girl and a young son, were in the home at the time.

No one else was injured.

Green told police that Wanks was renting the basement from her and doing work on the house.

Neighbors told Local 4 that Wanks had recently been laid off.

Neighbors said that had never seen or heard arguments at the home.

"They seemed to be having a good time just like any normal family having a barbeque outside," said neighbor E.J. Raffler.

An autopsy on the Wanks body is being performed. Also, a toxicology test will be done because police said they believed he was drinking at the time of the incident.

Local 4 has leaned that Wanks used to live in Warren, where he had had an outstanding warrant at one point, failure to pay child support fines and some traffic tickets.

Center Line police are investigating the incident, and cleanup crews are in the basement.
