GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. - Grosse Pointe Shores has issued a warning for residents with small pets.

"We believe there's about four or three coyotes living in our area," said Stephen Poloni, director of public safety for the city. "One female and two males. And the female has recently had some pups."

Resident John Briles said he's seen the coyotes and has heard about others having close encounters with them as well.

"I talked to a lady who said her lab got bit by one of them," Briles said.

But do the coyotes pose a threat to humans?

"Coyotes are normally scared of people, so when you come out they usually take off," Poloni said. "We encourage people to not turn their backs on the coyotes but to make a noise or throw sticks."

Briles said he feels the coyotes are becoming too comfortable in the area.

"He (the coyote) came a little closer, looked at me and made a big wide circle and cut through the yard," he said.

Poloni said the coyotes normally eat rabbits, squirrels, fruit and vegetables.

"But if the opportunity presents itself, they could go after small pets," Poloni said. "We ask people to watch their pets while they're in the yard."
