Authorities said a joint effort by the police and Douglas County Sheriff's Office to check up on sex offenders is working.
The sheriff's department receives thousands of dollars to track sex offenders.
Nearly 700 offenders are registered in Douglas County. Keeping track of them was once the sole duty of the sheriff's office.
Since March, the duty has been split between deputies and police officers.
"It's helping us avoid people who may slip through the cracks," said Sgt. Eric Sellers.
"We can follow up on what they've done and what we've done so we're not overlapping."
Omaha police Cpt. Todd Schmaderer said that police knew about sex offenders before the joint venture but couldn't keep track of them. Now, it's a regular part of the job, he said.
"They know that we're trying to keep a tab on them and the citizens appreciate knowing where they are," said Officer Shane Farrow.
Since March, the police department has conducted 500 check-ups on registered sex offenders.
