A solicitor and an assistant solicitor have received death threats in the mail, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office and the United States Postal Inspection Service are investigating threats made against the life of South Carolina Seventh Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy and Assistant Solicitor Ryan McCarty.
A news release from the SCSO said that on Oct. 16, McCarty received a letter from an inmate at McCormick Correctional Facility. The letter contained threats against McCarty's personal safety.
On Oct. 23, Gowdy received a similar letter from an inmate at the McCormick Correctional Facility containing death threats.
Both letters were sent to the State Law Enforcement Division for analysis.
Investigators said that the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office had no prior involvement with the only suspect in the case so far, Jermaine Nelson, an inmate at McCormick.
The text of the letters has not been released, but will be when charges are filed.
