The Northland Chapter of the Red Cross got quite a surprise recently when a Texas man, who works for Enbridge Energy, donated one thousand dollars to aid 11 families, who lost their homes and belongings in a Cloquet apartment building fire earlier this month.

Daryl R. Howell, of Baytown, Texas is a safety inspector working for Superior’s Enbridge Energy.

He was on a jobsite in Cloquet when he heard about the Red Cross disaster response on a local radio station and decided to get involved.

“I heard about the fire and had to help,” Howell said. I don’t like to see people down on their luck. It could happen to anyone, and I wanted to do something to help them along.”

“I just want to thank the Northland American Red Cross for all their hard work and support to help these people, as well,” Howell added.

Northland American Red Cross volunteers have been assisting the Carlton county families with services that include temporary housing and financial support for such things as food, clothing, prescription eyeglasses, and school supplies.

Daryl’s gift will go a long way to meet the $5,000 goal for the disaster, Gonzalez.

The Northland American Red Cross, which responds to about 100 local emergencies each year, is accepting donations now.

Gifts to help those affected by this and other local emergencies can be sent to the Northland American Red Cross, 2524 Maple Grove Road, Duluth, MN 55811.
