Indianapolis - A Central Indiana high school student riding his bike late Monday night died after being hit by a semi.
Police say a semi hit 17-year-old Eduard Whetstone on Kentucky Avenue and Heathrow Way on the southwest side. It happened at the entrance to the Ameriplex Business Park.
Whetstone was crossing Kentucky Avenue when he reportedly crossed the path of the semi. The driver could not stop in time.
Witnesses say the cyclist was wearing headphones and a hoodie, which may have been a contributing factor in the crash. He was taken to Wishard Hospital, where he died 30 minutes later. Police later said he was on his way to his girlfriend's house.
Investigators say the truck driver, a 41-year-old from Ohio, had a green light at the time of the accident and was not intoxicated.
Whetstone was a junior at Decatur Central High School, and his friends were remembering him Tuesday. They said his passion was playing the drums, and that he was a loyal friend.
"He'd be the first to tell you he messed up," said Tony Davis, talking about how Whetstone tackled problems. But Davis said if anyone ever needed anything, Whetstone would be ready to listen or offer a favor.
A memorial has been set up inside the high school, and friends say they will place a memorial near the accident site.
