ST. GEORGE, Ga. - Charlton County deputies and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are trying to determine how an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in St. Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said they're not releasing details about what happened in the shooting.

Like many neighbors who live off Gordon Street, Tammy Wilson stopped by the 11-year-old's home to see if there was anything she could do to help.

"It's terrible," Wilson said.

Wilson's son often played with the boy who investigators are not identifying. He was shot and killed around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

"I think it's just a freak accident, I do believe," Wilson said.

While investigators wouldn't go into detail surrounding the circumstances, they did say the child was not playing with a gun and was hit with a buckshot from a shotgun.

Investigators said the boy's parents were across the street just a few feet away from the home where the shooting happened.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents who are also working the case said the boy's parents weren't gone for more than five minutes when they heard the shot ring out and started running toward the house.

Now as the family grieves the loss of a life cut far too short, the community has one lingering question of why.

"He was a good kid," Wilson said. "I'll never forget him."

Investigators said the autopsy will be performed in Macon, Ga., and should be completed by Tuesday afternoon.

At that point, they said they will be able to release more details surrounding the shooting.
