Investigators could not enter the Campbellsburg Train Depot Monday to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed the historic building.

Firefighters said the fire started just after midnight Monday.

The state fire marshal and the Henry County sheriff said the building was vacant, with no electric service, used primarily for storage by its owner for the past 30 years.

This wasn't the first major fire in Campbellsburg recently, which left some people to wonder if someone may have set the historic building on fire.

In late April, the Campbellsburg fire station caught fire. Investigators have ruled that fire arson.

Campbellsburg Mayor Jan Fletcher said he hopes no one would intentionally ruin the symbol of their city.

"That was the first thing somebody said last night: 'Well, they're at it again,'" said Fletcher. "I just can't imagine. It's just above me that somebody would even think about doing something like that."

Meanwhile, lifelong Campbellsburg resident Sue Jones remembered good times at the depot.

"It's real special to the ones of us that remember going to the depot and catching the train and going places," said Jones.

The historic depot was built in 1890.

Photos at Campbellsburg City Hall show the train depot was one of the only buildings left standing after a tornado leveled nearly every building along Main Street on April 1, 1974.

The depot is now memorialized in the city's logo, local artwork and memories.
