LOUISVILLE, Ky. - WLKY.com

Police are investigating a rash of vandalism in south Louisville neighborhoods as detectives say someone is shooting out windows of cars and about 50 have been hit.

Police said the problem started about a month ago. They said the vandals are not stealing anything from the cars, just shooting the windows.

Police said vandals shot out windows of at least six cars in an Okolona neighborhood and two of those vehicles hit were parked in the same driveway.

One woman said her daughter's car was hit in September and last weekend the vandals struck again, this time shooting out the back window of an SUV in her driveway.

Police said it's happening in neighborhoods all around Okolona. They believe the vandals are shooting windows at random with pellet guns.

The vandals have even become so brazen they shot out the driver's side window of a Louisville Metro Police car that was parked along Artis Way and two other police vehicles.

"There's no monetary gain, no reason that we can have other than just pure mischief,” said community resource officer Todd Brimm.

Brimm said investigators believe the vandals are juveniles who do not live in the neighborhood.

In an effort to catch the vandals, Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

"It's absolutely tragic that these people have to experience this. And life's complicated enough without having your window shot out in your car," said Brimm.

Police said a similar incident happened nearby one year ago, but it's unclear if the same vandals are involved this time.

In addition to the car shootings, some people in the area have also noticed eggs being thrown in their driveways.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 582-CLUE. To be eligible for the $1,000 reward, you must call with information leading to an arrest.

When the vandals are caught they could face felony criminal mischief charges, which includes fines and jail time.

They could also face restitution and have to pay back all the money for the damages.
