McCain's mother hospitalized in Portugal

LISBON, Portugal - The 97-year-old mother of U.S. Senator John McCain spent the night in a Lisbon hospital after a fall, Portuguese health officials and the senator's office said Friday.

The Sao Jose hospital said in a written statement that Roberta McCain was in stable condition and was undergoing tests after being admitted Thursday evening. It provided no further information.

Senator McCain's office in Washington said Roberta McCain "had a fainting episode and injured her head" while on vacation in the Portuguese capital.

McCain has spoken to his mother and hospital doctors who said she is "recovering well," his office said.

The U.S. embassy in Lisbon issued a statement from Senator McCain's office saying his wife Cindy would travel to Lisbon to accompany her mother-in-law home. It provided no details, citing the privacy rights of American citizens.

Portuguese news channel TVI24 cited unnamed sources saying Roberta McCain bumped her head in a fall in the street.

A clerk at the two-star Hotel Borges in downtown Lisbon said Roberta McCain checked in there alone on Thursday afternoon and was due to leave Friday.
